Colchester is a market town in Essex and was founded in the Roman era. It has a population of 111,921 and has a current average sale price of £129,000. Colchester is situated 50 miles northeast of London.

The town lies on the River Colne and has been claimed to be the oldest recorded town in the United Kingdom. A Roman legionary fortress was established in Colchester, and some of the Roman walls are still visible in Colchester. The Fenwick Hoard unearthed Roman era jewellery in the town. Colchester was granted its first royal charter in the twelfth-century. Sites of interest include Colchester Castle, which is Grade I listed and was built during the Norman era. Balkerne Gate dates to the first-century. Jumbo Water Tower is located at Balkerne Gate and was constructed in the 1880s.

There are several museums in the town, including the Castle Museum, Hollytrees Museum and the Natural History Museum. Gosbecks Archaeological Park lies southwest of the town. Colchester Zoo opened in 1963, while Colchester Town Hall opened in 1902. Colchester Film Festival is an international film festival that takes place on a yearly basis.

Colchester United F.C. play their home games at Colchester Community Stadium, which has a capacity of 10,105. There is also a sports centre in the town.

There are a number of schools in Colchester, including Colchester County High School for Girls and the thirteenth-century Colchester Royal Grammar School. Colchester Institute and Colchester Sixth Form College provide further education courses. The University of Essex has a campus in Colchester, and the university has a total enrolment of 14,585 students.

Colchester railway station offers services to destinations including London, Ipswich, Chelmsford and Norwich. London Stansted Airport is located less than 30 miles from the town. There are bus services in operation.
